AwayHop FAQ & Install Guide
Last updated: 5 November 2026.
Will it work on my phone?
Your phone needs to support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. That includes most iPhone XS/XR models and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy S, Z and Note models, and many others.
To check: - iPhone: Settings → General → About. Look for "Digital SIM" or "Available SIM". - Android: Settings → Connections or Network → SIM manager. Look for "Add eSIM".
Some models sold in certain countries don't support eSIM. If you're unsure, check with your phone's maker.
Is it data only?
Yes. There's no phone number, calls or SMS. Use WhatsApp, FaceTime, Messenger and similar apps over data. You can keep your Australian SIM switched on for texts, such as bank codes, but turn off roaming on it to avoid charges from your home carrier.
When should I install it?
Install it before you leave, while you're on Wi-Fi, a day or two before your trip. Then turn it on when you land.
Most plans start when they first connect at your destination. Check your plan's details to be sure.
How to install on iPhone
- Open your eSIM email or order page on another screen, or tap the iOS install link (iOS 17.4 or newer).
- Go to Settings → Mobile Service → Add eSIM → Use QR Code, then scan the code.
- Label it "AwayHop" and pick your main line for calls and texts.
- When you arrive, go to Settings → Mobile Service → AwayHop: - turn the line on - set Data Roaming on - set Mobile Data to use AwayHop.
How to install on Android
- Go to Settings → Connections → SIM manager (or Network & internet → SIMs) → Add eSIM.
- Scan the QR code, or enter the activation code by hand.
- When you arrive: - turn the AwayHop eSIM on - set it as your mobile data SIM - turn Data roaming on.
Running low on data?
Just email hello@awayhop.com with your order number and the amount of data you want. We'll send you a secure payment link and add the data to your existing eSIM, usually within minutes during business hours. There's no need to reinstall anything.
Top-up conditions:
- Each eSIM can be topped up a maximum of 9 times, while it is unused or active. An expired eSIM can't be topped up.
- On fixed plans (for example 3GB for 30 days), a top-up adds both data and days.
- On daily plans, a top-up adds extra days only.
- Some plans can't be topped up (for example Thailand 50GB for 10 days). We'll always confirm what's available before you pay.
- Top-ups are paid separately, are added to your existing eSIM, and are non-refundable once applied.
Troubleshooting
- No signal: check that Data Roaming is on for the eSIM and that it's set as your data line. Then restart your phone.
- Still not connecting: go to the eSIM's settings, turn off "Automatic" network selection and pick a partner network by hand.
- No internet but you have signal: check the APN shown in your install details, if one is listed.
- Can't scan the QR code: enter the SM-DP+ address and activation code by hand.
- Deleted the eSIM: contact us. It usually can't be reinstalled.
